I thought about this class the other day while I was walking up Van Ness - like I said a few posts earlier, walking definitely provides a feel for the terrain. While I usually ride my bike up Polk one street over, my co-worker and I walked up Van Ness after going to the farmer's market. We were actually going to the gym, too, but decided to skip the leg work outs since we walked a decent amount (from the bottom of Van Ness to Pine Street).
I can imagine a mountainous area beneath these streets, especially after researching a few of the surrounding areas like this picture of Hayes Valley in 1865 only several blocks over from Van Ness. It's an interesting thought that if we had built around nature rather than on top of it, how it would look and be different.
